Gianluca Sgueo is Department Director at I-Com (Institute for competitiveness – a think tank devoted to economic and social analysis), Adjunct Professor in “Media, Activism and Democracy” at the New York University-Florence and Lecturer in “Lobbying and Democracy” at Bocconi University. He is Faculty Member in the Master Program on “Public Affairs and Communication” (Sole24Ore) and Scientific Director of the Master Degree in “Economics and Management of the Non-Profit Sector” (Sole24Ore).
Post-doc scholar in Globalization and Democracy (Centre for Social Studies – University of Coimbra, Portugal), PhD in Administrative Law (University of Salento, Italy), Gianluca Sgueo graduated in Law (University of Rome, La Sapienza, 2004) and in Political Sciences cum laude (University of Viterbo, 2006). After graduating, he specialized in public, administrative and European law. He obtained a MA in Administrative & Public Law (Scuola Superiore della Pubblica Amministrazione e degli Enti Locali, Rome, 2005) and MA in European Law (European Public Law Academy, Athens, 2009). In 2008 he was appointed visiting research fellow at the Law School of the New York University. In 2009 (January-September) he was nominated enseignant-chercheurat Sciences Po, Paris. In 2014 (September-November) he joined the Amsterdam Centre of International Law at the University of Amsterdam as visiting scholar.
His professional background includes several experiences in the public sector. In 2007, he was nominated expert in legal matters for the Italian Ministry of Public Administration. In 2009 he joined the traineeship program at the European Ombudsman in Strasbourg. In 2010 he was appointed legal and communication expert for the Italian government. In 2011-2013 he served as Head of the Press Office of the Italian Government. In 2014 the Italian Ministry of Youth appointed him Coordinator of the task force for the presidency of the European Semester. He is professional journalist since 2009.
Since 2011 Gianluca Sgueo joined the University of Viterbo as Adjunct Professor (2011, Media Law; 2012-2014 European Law). Prior to that he lectured in Rome, Florence, Paris, New York and Amsterdam.
Gianluca Sgueo academic interests focus on the relationship between participatory democracy and globalization, and lobbying. His doctoral research compared 4 different models of consultative democracy operating in the supranational arena and their interactions with the domestic level. His post-doctoral research analyses the presence of NGOs in the global arena and the interactions they have with International Organizations. Gianluca Sgueo authored several articles and book-chapters in Italian and English. He authored “Esperimenti di democrazia globale” (Rubbettino) in 2011, and “Lobbying&Lobbismi. Le regole del gioco in una democrazia reale” in 2012 (EGEA-Boccony University Press).
In 2013-2014 Gianluca Sgueo joined the board of experts on lobbying appointed by Transparency International – Italy; since 2012 he is member of IRPA (Institute of Research on Public Administration).
